What are the best tips for a mosaic puzzle?
Read the Laws first, place the hardest piece early, and stop when you are stuck. Those three habits solve most days of Terrazzo, a daily mosaic for iPhone and iPad.
- Read before you place. The Law cards tell you what the frame wants.
- Hard pieces first. The biggest region or the Vein leaves the fewest choices.
- Rest is a move. A fresh look often finds the gap at once.
Why read the Law cards first?
Each day uses one or two of three Laws. Knowing which ones apply tells you what to watch for. A stone that looks fine can quietly break a Law you did not read.
Spend a minute on the cards. Say each Law in your own words. If a Law is unclear, the plain-words hint arrives at 08:00 UTC on the hints page.
Which piece should I place first?
Place the piece with the fewest possible homes. Under Kinship, that is the largest region. Under the Vein, it is the path between the two notches.
An easy piece fits almost anywhere, so it can wait. Placing it early only blocks the space a harder piece needs. Our guide to placing big Kinship regions goes deeper.
How do I keep the Laws from clashing?
Check each new stone against every Law in play, not only the one you were thinking about. This is where most mistakes hide.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch join into one region. Make sure the sizes still match.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path with no branches and no loops.
The Solitude rule has a quirk. Corners count there, but they do not count for Kinship. Keep that difference in mind.
What do I do when I am stuck?
Lift the last two or three stones, not the whole board. Try the other orientation before you move a stone elsewhere. Then walk away for a while.
Nothing here runs on a clock. There is no timer and no streak to lose, so a break costs you nothing. A fresh look often shows the gap.
When is it fine to use a hint?
Whenever you like. Every day has three hints, released on a schedule. A nudge arrives at 00:00 UTC, the Laws in plain words at 08:00 UTC, and the answer at 16:00 UTC.
Take the smallest hint that helps. One thing to know: the leaderboard counts unaided solves only. That means no hints, no salvages and no seat marks. If the ranking does not matter to you, ignore it.
How can I improve over time?
Play the same way each day, and notice what tripped you. Over a week, the patterns repeat. You start to see tight corners and long paths before you place a stone.
The archive of past mosaics lets you practise on older days. It belongs to TERRAZZO+, which is free for everyone for now. Past days open with keys you earn by solving the daily puzzle.
