What are tile matching puzzle games?
Tile matching puzzle games ask you to place or pair pieces by colour or shape. Terrazzo is a quiet cousin of the idea: you fit coloured stones into a frame so the day's Laws hold. It is one puzzle a day for iPhone and iPad.
- Matching can mean many things. Some games clear pairs, some link colours, and some fit pieces into a space.
- Terrazzo fits stones, it does not clear them. Nothing disappears, and the finished mosaic stays on the board.
- There is no clock and no ad. You can put it down halfway and return tomorrow.
What kinds of tile matching games are there?
The label covers a wide family. Some games ask you to swap neighbouring pieces to make a line. Others ask you to find two matching tiles and remove them.
A third kind asks you to place every piece so a set of rules is satisfied. Terrazzo belongs there. You are not racing to clear the board. You are building a picture that holds together.
How is Terrazzo different?
You do not match two stones and watch them vanish. You place coloured stones and check them against three Laws.
- Kinship. Stones of the same colour that touch form a region. The frame's edge lists the sizes those regions must have.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Most days use one or two Laws. The Law cards at the start of each day show which. The full walk-through is in How to play Terrazzo.
Why do people find this kind of puzzle relaxing?
Fitting pieces gives you small, clear decisions. Each stone either sits well or it does not. You can see the answer taking shape.
Calm also comes from what is missing. With no timer, no ads and no account, nothing asks for your attention except the board. If that appeals, cozy puzzle games for iPhone explains what to look for.
What should I look for in a tile puzzle?
Ask a few plain questions before you download anything.
1. Does it have a clock or a move limit that pushes you? 2. Do ads interrupt the puzzle? 3. Is there a clear end to each session? 4. Does it reward careful thought over fast fingers?
A game that answers well on all four suits a slow evening. Terrazzo is built to answer well on every one.
What happens when the colours settle?
When every Law holds, the colours settle into a picture of something real. A short story tells you what you made. Then the day is done, and there is nothing to chase until tomorrow.
Everyone gets the same mosaic on the same day, so it is easy to talk about with a friend. If you get stuck, there are three hints each day: a nudge, the Laws in plain words, and the answer.
Is it free?
The daily puzzle is free to play. The archive of past mosaics, Stillwater and Solve DNA are part of TERRAZZO+, which is free for everyone for now. Past days in the archive open with keys earned by solving the daily puzzle.
