What is the best tile puzzle game?
The best tile puzzle game is the one that matches how you like to think. If you want a calm, finite puzzle, look for one with no clock and a clear end. Terrazzo is one such game: a single daily mosaic for iPhone and iPad.
- Choose by pace. Some tile games reward speed. Others reward patience, and only one of those feels restful.
- Choose by ending. A puzzle that finishes each day lets you stop without guilt.
- Choose by interruptions. Ads, timers and sign-up screens all pull you out of the board.
What counts as a tile puzzle?
The phrase covers a wide family. Some games ask you to pair tiles and clear them. Others ask you to slide tiles into order, or to fit pieces into a frame.
Terrazzo is the last kind. You place coloured stones into a frame so the day's Laws hold. Nothing is cleared, and the finished mosaic stays on the board. If you like the matching kind, tile matching puzzle games compares the types.
How do I pick one that is not stressful?
Ask four plain questions before you download.
1. Is there a timer or a move limit? 2. Do ads appear between or during puzzles? 3. Does each session have a natural stopping point? 4. Can I leave halfway and return without losing anything?
A game that answers well on all four suits a slow evening. Terrazzo has no timer, no ads and no account. You can put it down and pick it up tomorrow.
What makes Terrazzo a tile puzzle worth trying?
Each day gives you one mosaic, and it is the same for everyone. You fit stones into the frame until three kinds of Law all hold. When they do, the colours settle into a picture of something real, with a short story.
- Kinship. Touching stones of one colour form a region, and the frame's edge lists the sizes those regions must have.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Most days use one or two Laws. The walk-through in How to play Terrazzo covers each one with examples.
Is a daily tile puzzle better than an endless one?
It depends on what you want. Endless games suit long journeys, when you have an hour to fill. A daily puzzle suits a small, steady habit.
One mosaic a day means you finish and feel done. There is no level 400 waiting behind it. For some people that limit is exactly the appeal.
What if I get stuck?
Getting stuck is part of the pleasure, but it should not spoil your evening. Each day there are three public hints on the hints page.
- A nudge at 00:00 UTC.
- The Laws in plain words at 08:00 UTC.
- The answer at 16:00 UTC.
Use as much or as little as you like. The leaderboard counts unaided solves only, so hints never cost you anything else. If you have never played, start with the nudge and see how far it carries you.
Is Terrazzo free?
The daily puzzle is free to play. TERRAZZO+ adds the archive of past mosaics, Stillwater and Solve DNA, and it is free for everyone for now. Past days in the archive open with keys earned by solving the daily puzzle.
Can I play a tile puzzle online instead?
Terrazzo is an app for iPhone and iPad only. It is not a browser game. You can still read each day's hints on the website before you play.
